Tribute to ...Ray - NEW DEADLINE

Postby lutewhine on Sat Feb 23, 2008 6:16 pm

As many of you are aware, a special 2-disc edition of It's A Shame About Ray is released in the US in late March.
As many of you are also aware, we at www.lemonheads.co.uk have an ongoing covers project, where we aim to get every album track covered.

Currently, we have 7 of the 12 tracks covered, and we wondered if there's any chance of getting hold of good covers of the remaining 5 in order to make our tribute to Ray available at the same time that the special edition hits the shelves?

We've had plenty of interest in all the Ray tracks, but we're still waiting for versions of these 5:

Confetti
The Turnpike Down
Alison’s Starting To Happen
Hannah and Gabi (edit - no longer needed...more than 1 version accepted!)
Ceiling Fan in my Spoon

So, do we have any takers for these 5 that are able to record good quality cover versions in the next month?

We're also hoping to get some alternate versions together to include as bonus tracks, so get cracking if you're into covering any of the tracks we've already got locked into the main tracklisting.

Rockin’ Stroll
It’s a Shame About Ray (edit - no longer needed...more than 1 version accepted!)
Rudderless
My Drug Buddy (edit - no longer needed...more than 1 version accepted!)
Bit Part (edit - no longer needed...more than 1 version accepted!)
Kitchen
Frank Mills

IMPORTANT NOTE! If you record a bonus track, you also have to cover another track labelled green or orange on our list -

The list can be found at http://evandando.co.uk/forum/viewtopic. ... 95&start=0

Need to be: high bitrate audio, preferably .wav. Nothing recorded at a bitrate less than 320kbps will be considered.
Don't email tracks directly - please send via www.sendspace.com or www.yousendit.com specifying sfcp@evandando.co.uk as the recipient
(after sending, it's always a good idea to mail the address directly letting us know you've sent a track)

Deadline for submissions - March 25th
(we'll aim to release by the UK release of the reissue, currently scheduled for March 31st)

Note that the standard of the tracks we have for our tribute to Ray so far is incredibly high, not just in terms of performance, but also in terms of recording quality.

Although we're really hoping to get all 5 remaining tracks covered in the next month so we can release it, we'll postpone the release if the quality we get in isn't good enough.

This isn't to say that we need people to book time in recording studios - there are plenty of cheap and fairly easy ways to get a good quality recording at home these days.
Similarly, we have no problem with lo-fi, but there is a difference between track that's lo-fi and a track that's poorly recorded and performed.

Bear in mind is that we've had a lot of recordings submitted for the project so far that are a solo vocalist self-accompanied on guitar. This is fine if the voice and the playing is up to scratch, but we've had tracks in where people have clearly rushed their recording and emailed us the first take they've put down: bum notes, coughs, pop, wheezes and all.

If you're a solo artist, you first of all need to be good to be considered, but you also need to make sure your cover isn't just a random caterwaul and strum. We've rejected quite a few tracks that fall into this category, so please consider what you're submitting.

Likewise with bands - watch your levels, and allow your singer to be heard and not drowned in a sea of drums and guitar.

Sorry if this comes across as excessively picky (this from a guy than can't play anything, and sings like a retarded infant), but we really hate having to say no to people, and I'd much rather point people in the right direction before they start.

We've now got people hopefully covering Confetti, Alison's Starting To Happen and The Turnpike Down in the next month.

Don't be put off if they're your favourite tracks - as I've said there is scope to include more than 1 version (any duplicates being bonus tracks).

So, we're still looking for suitors for:

Hannah and Gabi
Ceiling Fan in my Spoon

Two great, great tracks. Any takers?  :D

Hannah and Gabi is still languishing unloved.

Anyone out there into covering this fine, fine song?  :D

I'll have a go at "Gabi". When do you need it by?

Oh, and all of my records have been lo-fi to date. I wouldn't imagine this would be any different. Lo-fi, sure... but still in tune :)

Guess what? "H & G" is being sendspaced to you as we speak. Please let me know if it's up to scratch, because if not... I'll use it for something else. I liked doing it a lot :)

Fucking hell some of you lot work fast.

We actually now have two fantastic versions of Hannah & Gabi in (they arrived within about 20 minutes of one another!), so if you are interested in being involved, please steer clear of that track. We have enough of a dilemma with that one as it is!

If anyone is still interested in contributing, we have just one version in (or expected) of the following tracks, meaning there is potential for us to use an alternate version as a bonus track.

Rockin’ Stroll
It’s a Shame About Ray
Rudderless
The Turnpike Down
Alison’s Starting To Happen
Kitchen
Ceiling Fan in my Spoon
Frank Mills

Just to be clear - by submitting any of the above, you are submitting for consideration as bonus tracks only.

For those bands and artists that I've been in touch with in the last couple of weeks in regard to the 5 tracks we were lacking, please disregard the above and continue to beaver away - your anticipated submissions are factored in on the above list and we are still expecting your tracks.

Hypothetical/unlikely scenario-related addendum:
If a version turns up of one of the tracks listed above that's truly exceptional (and it really would have to be - the standard of submissions so far has been tremendous), we may consider promoting it to the main tracklisting and then rejigging things so we end up using one we've already accepted as a bonus track.

Everything already accepted will absolutely, definitely be included on the final release, however.

Deadline in 5 days!

Just a couple of stragglers now for the main tracklisting, so fingers crossed this all works out.

The album is sounding absolutely fantastic so far, and it's going to be a great mixture of Squealing Fans alumni alongside several newcomers.

More news soon...  :music:

For those coming late to this, slots are still open for alternate versions of:

Confetti
The Turnpike Down
Alison’s Starting To Happen
Ceiling Fan in my Spoon (an alternate version is promised, but yet to arrive)
Rockin’ Stroll
Rudderless
Kitchen
Frank Mills

Not for the ...Ray tribute - we thought about it to tie in with the reissue, but as we only gave people a month's notice of the deadline, it would have been seriously optimistic to expect covers of all the B-sides as well as the album tracks we were lacking.

If the project continues to progress after the Ray tribute goes is completed, we're going to look at expanding it to take in absolutely every track the Lemonheads have ever recorded, including B-sides. If there's anything you're particularly into covering, feel free to PM or mail me.

So, to recap - for this Tuesday's deadline we're only interested in tracks from the original issue of ...Ray.

Oh, and incidentally, this album is now definitely, definitely going to be released. We have at least one good version of every track we need. :guitar:

There are still a few bands going right to the wire with their recording, so it'll be a little while before the tracklisting gets 100% nailed down. It'll all become clear very, very soon however.

It's going to be fucking awesome. :music:

Hmm. Okay. I'm just not a big fan of the Ray album (i know, i know!) but I adore Shaky Ground and figure that might be acceptable. I'll definitely want to be involved in the Car Button Cloth/Baby I'm Bored tribs if they ever happen.

They're happening. Feel free to pick any non-red tracks from the list in the neighbouring thread and put something out way.
